Abstract:Thispaperusestwo-periodpaneldataofruraljuniorhighschoolstudents selectedbystratifiedrandomsamplingfrom Xcityin WesternChina.Weusecross-lagged regressionapproachtoanalyzethecorrelationbetweenstudent’seducationalaspirationand academicperformance.Wefindthatmoststudentsholdhigheducationalaspiration,more than80% studentshopetoattendcollegeandabove.Students’educationalaspirationisnot fixed,somestudentsadjusttheireducationalaspiration withtheirgradegoingup,22.91% studentsincreasetheireducationalaspiration,28.91% studentsdecreasetheireducational aspiration. Educational aspiration and academic performance can predict each other significantly,butthepathbetweeneducationalaspirationstoacademicperformanceseemsto bestrongerthanthereverseinruralChina.
